Abstract: Comodulated masking noise and binaural cues can facilitate detecting a target masked by noise.These cues induce a decrease in detection thresholds, quantified as comodulation masking release(CMR) and binaural masking level difference (BMLD), respectively. Here, we investigated theirrelevance to speech perception with speech-like spectro-temporal stimulus dynamics. In speech, frequency components are non-stationary in time as formant transition occurs duringspeech. We hypothesized that if comodulation or binaural cues can induce perceptual grouping offormants, formant transition in the speech unit will not affect the amount of masking release. We setthree masker bands at formant frequencies F1, F2, and F3 based on the CV combinations: /GU/, /FU/,and /PU/. We measured CMR and BMLD for each condition. The maskers were either uncorrelated(UN) or comodulated (CM), and the target tone was presented with either no interaural phasedifference (IPD) or IPD of pi. We found that the CMR was little (~2 dB) while BMLD was comparable to previous findings (~9dB). In conclusion, we suggest that factors other than comodulation play a role in perceptualgrouping of formants to induce speech perception
