ISO 23591 Acoustic quality criteria for music rehearsal rooms and spaces – why and how (vor Ort)

Abstract:
Each week, more than 2,5 million music rehearsal rooms are used throughout Europe, and about 14 million German people makes music or sing in ensembles in their leisure time - in addition thousands of professional musicians use rehearsal rooms every day. Analysis show that approximately 85% of the music rehearsal rooms are not suited to the type of music which in is rehearsed in them. This, and the experiences from Norway and other countries using the Norwegian music room standard NS 8178:2014, was the background for developing an ISO standard for music rehearsal rooms. The scope was to “specify global, differentiated criteria for acoustic conditions and characteristics at music rehearsal rooms and spaces.” The presentation will explain the main framework and principles in the standard, the music genres (quiet acoustic music, loud acoustic music and amplified music) and ensemble types and sizes included in the standard. The presentation will also present the main quality criteria and explain how the standard is intended to be used when planning and designing rooms where music rehearsal is one of the main uses of a room, whether it’s used for practice by one musician, for a choir or orchestra or anything in between.
