Abstract: Aircraft flyover measurements using microphone array methods are a common tool to localize and characterize partial noise sources of aircraft. Based on these results, promising design changes for low-noise aircraft can be developed and implemented. Improvements of microphone array setups and algorithms are still subject to ongoing research. In the framework of the international research project LION, a virtual acoustical environment is developed allowing flexible and fast evaluation of the performance and accuracy of microphone array methods. The test environment incorporates models for sound propagation in the atmospheric boundary layer and is used to generate test cases consisting of multiple virtual microphone signals. Outdoor sound propagation phenomena like Doppler effect, geometrical spreading, and air absorption are considered. Further, the project aims at realistically modelling the effect of atmospheric turbulence on sound pressure amplitude and phase. This contribution will present the preparation and content of test cases for synthetic aircraft flyover measurements above a large microphone array as used in flyover tests of the German Aerospace Center, DLR. The established process of generating fully controllable test cases and the analyses of these, forms an efficient framework for fast evaluation of newly developed algorithms.
