Abstract: This contribution discusses design and validation of multilayer micro-perforated/slit panels (MPP/MSP) to create both high sound absorption and wide bandwidth simultaneously. Microslit panels are similar to micro-perforated panels, and can similarly achieve high absorption coefficients without using fibrous materials. Yet, fabrication of microslit panels is much simplified, they are visually more transparent than perforated panels when using transparent panel materials since the microslit panels yield more unobstructed panel for a given perforation rate. However, both micro-perforated and slit panel absorbers in single configuration are limited to a narrow frequency bandwidth. By stacking several panels into a multilayer structure, a high absorption becomes achievable in a broadband. A Bayesian framework is applied to cope with design challenges arising from designing MPP/MSP parameters for multiple layers to fulfill a given design scheme. This design method rapidly converges to the optimized parameters of each individual layer in a parsimonious set of layers so that the overall multi-layer configuration meets the design scheme for minimally possible fabrication complexity. In addition, performing iterative Bayesian analysis during the panel fabrication and experimental validation guides corrections due to fabrication inaccuracies.
