Abstract: Directivity of a musical instrument is a characteristic feature that is critical in several domains, including instrument recording, seating arrangement of orchestra, and auralization of instruments. An interesting question is the influence of the room acoustic environment on the perceptual difference of directivity of an instrument. To answer this question, a series of musical recordings of five different instruments has been performed in three distinct room acoustic environments. The resultant sound fields were recorded using binaural heads at near and far-field locations. Musical fragments for instruments were composed in order to bring the possible variations in the directivity patterns. In each room, the musicians had to play the musical fragment with maximum possible consistency and excite the room in different orientations. These recorded samples are evaluated using a listening test with expert listeners (Tonmeister students and musicians) to rate the sound perception with respect to the angle of orientations of the instrument and the contribution of room acoustics on it. Initial studies reveal that the perception of difference in the directivity of an instrument is a parametric function of the acoustic environment characteristics. The correlation of room acoustic parameters with the test responses is performed and discussed in this work.
