Abstract:

Television, hi-fi or teleconference systems applied for sound reproduction might introduce distortions to the original audio signal affecting the audio quality. In everyday life, the acoustic environments are often complex with multiple sound objects, comprising the target object (e.g., talker or music from a sound reproduction systems), as well as interfering objects (e.g., disturbing talkers). As such situations often take place in rooms, reverberation additionally interferes with the (distorted) target object. Here we assessed how the auditory system detects and rates linear, non-linear, and spatial distortions of a target stimulus in such complex acoustic environments, involving one or two interferer sounds in simulated rooms with different amount of reverberation. The target and interferer were either co-located as if contained in the original audio, e.g., a news broadcast on the television in a living room, or spatially separated as if the target source was interfered by additional sources in the room. The presence of interferers and reverberation had a significant effect on the distortion detection thresholds of speech signals. Although, supra-threshold quality ratings were often influenced by the number and spatial position of interferers as well as reverberation time, no such influence was measured for certain types/strength of distorted signals.
