Abstract:

Knowing the directivity characteristics of musical instruments is useful in several situations such as microphone placement in musical recordings and auralization of virtual musical instruments. One way to measure the directivity patterns of musical instruments is to use artificial excitation, a microphone, and a turntable which allows high-resolution directivity patterns to be acquired. However, a downside of employing this method is that the acoustic shadowing caused by the musician, which is an integral element of the setup in a real scenario, is not included in the measurements. In this paper, we present high-resolution directivity patterns of a trumpet in 3D, measured using artificial excitation, a turntable and a mannequin. Measurements were done using different setups, with the instrument alone and with a mannequin attached to the setup that allowed to obtain an approximation of the acoustic effect of a musician in a performance. Similarities and variations in the measured patterns are observed and discussed in this work.
