Abstract: Headsets providing Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) features have become extremely popular in recent years. While the first-generation devices were mainly larger and wired over-ear headsets, modern wireless in-ear devices are getting more common. Standardized testing of ANC headsets typically evaluates measures like total, passive, and active insertion loss to quantify the performance of these devices. The test setups in such specifications usually require the usage of head-and-torso-simulators (HATS) that are equipped with artificial ears according to ITU-T P.57.For many years, the artificial ear of type 3.3 with anatomic pinna and cylindric ear canal according to IEC 60318-4 was regarded as the state-of-the-art measurement device for these tasks. Recently, new ear simulators were introduced in ITU-T P.57. These type 4 ears specify both an anatomically shaped ear canal and a fullband transfer impedance. However, their applicability for the performance evaluation of ANC headsets has not been investigated in detail so far. This contribution assesses the ANC performance of commercially available headsets based on a novel auditory test design and on objective, HATS-based measurements. The listening test design is based on auditory loudness assessment in conjunction with a realistic ambient noise reproduction.
