Investigation into Reproducing Reverberation for the Receiving Path (vor Ort)

Abstract: Conference phones and smart speakers became ubiquitous in recent years. These devices are usually positioned at a distance from the user and the room acoustics between user and device become relevant – both for the sending path from the talker to the device and the receiving path from the device to the listener. A realistic and efficient way of reproducing reverberation in a defined manner is accordingly necessary for developing and testing such devices. A method for the sending path already exists in the form of the technical specification ETSI TS 103 557. However, no specific approach for the receiving path has been proposed so far.This contribution presents an experimental investigation into the applicability of the sending path methodology for the receiving path. The similarities and differences between reproducing reverberation for the two paths are highlighted. A set of typical devices is positioned in real, reverberant environments as well as in their corresponding reproductions. Several acoustic measurements of the receiving path are conducted in both environments. The measurements for both cases are compared to quantify the fidelity of the reproduction system and to give an initial verdict on the applicability of the existing methodology for this path.
